Why Shave a Bunny for Down Syndrome?
“Last year, my little baby girl, Charlie, was born. The pediatrician thought she might have had Down syndrome. Charlie got put through a few blood tests and we had to wait 5 days for those tests to come back, so my wife and I got a firsthand experience of what parents must go through when their child is diagnosed with Down syndrome. Ever since then, I’ve always thought that if there was something I could do to help those new parents, then I’d love to get involved.
“…I can’t wait to get rid of this mop, and I’m in the very fortunate position that by cutting my hair, I can raise some money. Along with Chris and Dave, we’ve joined forces with Down Syndrome NSW and have decided to raise some money and awareness, and have a bit of fun along the way. So please give generously! It’s a cause held close to my heart.”
- Matt King, South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Did you know that Down syndrome is one of the most common known causes of intellectual disability?
Also known as Trisomy 21, Down syndrome affects people of all ages, all races and all economic groups. In Australia around 300 babies with Down syndrome are born every year.
For new parents, welcoming a child who has Down syndrome into the world can often be a very emotional time. The process of welcoming a child you weren’t expecting can be very challenging -without the right support.
But here is the Upside of Down!
These days people with Down syndrome are leading more extraordinary lives than ever before. With good support and information, many parents soon realise the potential for their child to lead a long, happy, and rewarding life – people with Down syndrome can go to mainstream schools, have jobs, become famous actors, get married and live independently. The possibilities for them are truly endless.
Every child is a blessing
Here at Down Syndrome NSW, an independent, parent-run organisation, we work tirelessly to provide much needed support and information to people who have Down syndrome and their families.
We help to create support networks for families, and run programs that assist people with Down syndrome to be fully included in their communities – which grow stronger and more caring as a result.
But here’s where you come in – because we couldn’t continue doing what we do without your help!
Help us kick some goals for people with Down syndrome!
